The car pictured is a 1984 Mazda RX-7 which runs in the SCCA Improved Touring A class. This car was my daily driver since 1986. I took it off the road in 1993, finished the performance mods, and installed the roll cage. For this class, a rotary engine must remain close to stock. The rotors are weight matched to increase the redline. A rev limiter was made since there are not many out there that work with the rotaries dual ignition system. I set the limit to 8400RPM and added shift lights. The exhaust uses a header with both tubes extending to the rear axle. At this point there is a collector which goes to a supertrap. The water pump is modified to reduce cavitation at high RPM, the radiator recored with a triple row core, and the stock water to oil cooler was replaced with the air to oil unit from the second generation RX7 mounted in front of the radiator.
For the suspension I started with 13X7 wheels with 205/60 Kumho tires. The front sway bar size is increased and has heim joint end links. I use 300# Eibach front springs on adjustable spring perches with Tokiko Ilumina adjustable struts. Camber plates were added to make the front camber adjustable and all the front bushings were changed to polyurethane. Bump steer blocks were installed to adjust the camber curve for the lowered suspension. The air dam has 4 ducts to send air to the front rotors and calipers.
The rear suspension uses adjustable Tokoko shocks, 175# springs, no rear bar, and the stock watt link was replaced with a custom adjustable panhard rod. It uses a stock limited slip differential, which is shimmed. Since the rotary does not have much bottom end torque a 4.44 ring and pinion is used.
For safety, the car has an 8 point cage with extra bracing and NASCAR style door bars. It has an 8 gallon ATL fuel cell, Kirkey race seat, 5 point harness, window net, fire system, and master switch. It also has a removable steering wheel since it is a tight fit to get in and out of the car.
In 1990, I became chief of technical inspection for Northern New Jersey Region of the SCCA, and still hold that position. In 1992 I became a trustee on the NNJR board. That prompted me into becoming Assistant Regional Executive in 1996 for a two year term. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to fit both racing and being assistant into my schedule, so I did not fulfill a second term.
Then in 1994, I completed the two drivers schools necessary to race in a regional event. I was approved and drove in two regional races and receive my regional competition license.
During the years 1995 - 1996, I raced in a limited number of events to keep my license current. Then in 1997 after some car problems, it was getting too expensive and I was forced to put the car up for sale. In 1998, Tellurian Networks, then known as Garden Networks, was willing to sponsor me for my races and I was able to put the car back on the track.
I would like to personally thank Tellurian Networks, without which this season would not have been possible.
