contest 2000-2001. Sorry! $50 WINNER: "Washing Away the Dead" by Melissa Montimurro of Layton Honorable Mention: "Hunches On Making Love by Madeline Tiger of Montclair: 1st Runner up "Sometimes...Not Always," by Gina Larkin of Edison: 2nd Runner up B.J. Ward judging anonymous poems sent to him for this year's contest kindly offered these words of encouragement: ".... Thank you again for the great honor of having been asked to judge this year's SWAA poetry contest. I must say that this is one outstanding batch of poems to choose from. Would it sound gutless to say that I feel all of these poems deserve some form of a prize or recogntion? Not because I'm a nice guy, but because they're fine pieces of writing. However, I've chosen three. [As above.] I will also say that out of all the other poems here, there are three others that came exceptionally close to winning the third place prize and I consider them all tied for the non-existent fourth place. They are "Reading Poetry in Bed," "Still Life: Children's Choir," and Timeless Rite: A Trilogy. I tell you here incase you wanted to inform the authors of my troubled decision, for reasons of encouragement. You can feel free to enclose a copy of this letter, if you think it appropriate."... [B.J.Ward, August 2000, Warren County] B.J. Ward didn't mention any names as he didn't know them so we tell you that the poems mentioned in the last paragraph are by David F. Vincenti ("Reading Poetry in Bed") of West Caldwell, Ruth Zimmerman ("Still Life: Children's Choir") of Morristown, and Pina Pipino ("Timeless Rite: A Trilogy") of Long Valley, respectively. We thank B.J Ward for his judgement and congratulate all with his encouraing words, and we thank all the entrants for their effort in entering. Their entries made the contest possible. Thanks, truly to all and keep writing and enjoying poetry! "Reading Poetry in Bed," "Still Life: Children's Choir," and Timeless Rite: A Trilogy.
